Gortyn was an ancient city and archaeological site today in Crete, 45 km south of Heraklion. Gortyna, which was the capital of Crete and Cyrenaic during the Roman era, was inhabited in 3000 BC. and flourished during the Minoan period between 1600 and 1100 BC. It was destroyed twice by earthquakes, the second completely. In its ruins are built the villages Agioi Deka, Metropolis and Ambelouzos.
